What is a certified organic product?

Organic production is a holistic system designed to be sustainable and to promote balance with the natural environment

Organic product certification is based on four general principles: health, ecology, fairness and care

Soil fertility must be maintained and enhanced

Weeds and disease must be managed using biological and mechanical methods

Crop selection, rotation and recycling must promote biological diversity and encourage a balanced predator-prey relationship

Livestock living conditions will vary depending on specific animal type and needs, however, organic agricultural practices must prove to minimize stress, promote good health, and prevent disease

Products that bear the Canada organic logo is guaranteed to contain 95%, or more, organic content. The logo is voluntary, but when used must be in compliance with Organic Products Regulations, 2009

Who verifies organic claims?
CFIA inspectors verify organic claims by:

Ensuring that the production methods meet the company’s organic plan

Evaluating company records; which operators are required to provide upon request to inspectors, records must maintain for at least 5 years upon creation

Inspecting areas of production where organic products may become contaminated
